TLFL Party prizes

The Turning Left for Less reader party is on 13 January at the Conrad St James hotel in London. We have now secured a number of prizes for the raffle, but we still have a few companies to come back to us due to the Christmas break, so there could be more to come. The order of the prizes will be announced once we have the full list.

  • 50,000 Virgin Points courtesy of Virgin Red
  • Lunch for two at The Pem at Conrad St James
  • A year’s subscription to the Wine Flyer from British Airways
  • A free lifetime of Gold membership for Reward Flight Finder
  • A Theragun from Jumeirah hotels

Act now to grab the last few remaining tickets to the party here. More information about the party and the special rates at the Conrad is available in this article.

Virgin Red

Virgin Red, Virgin’s rewards club, has kindly donated 50,000 Virgin Points for you to spend on a wide variety of rewards from flights with Virgin Atlantic and partner airlines, to a sailing with Virgin Voyages or even a Greggs sausage roll! Virgin Points never expire, so you can use them however and whenever you like.

When you link your Virgin Red account with your Flying Club account, you’ll be able to use your points on rewards across both programmes.

It’s really easy to earn Virgin Points too – whether it’s using your Virgin Atlantic credit card, staying at a Virgin Hotel, booking your train via Virgin Trains Ticketing or even your everyday online shopping when you go via Virgin Red, you’ll soon see the points mount up.

I recently spent some of my points enjoying the Virgin Red Room at the AO Arena in Manchester, which you can read about here.

Here are some suggestions of how you could spend your 50,000 points if you win:

  • Return economy flight from London to New York with Virgin Atlantic (for 2 people)
  • Upgrade to Virgin Atlantic Upper Class
  • Theatre tickets for two
  • Cinema tickets for the family
  • Experiences with Virgin Experience Days, including a B747 simulator, one night hotel stay for two, flying lesson, helicopter flight or supercar experiences
  • Delta Air Lines return transcontinental business class within the U.S.
  • Delta flights from the US West Coast to Hawaii return in economy
  • Delta One Suites U.S. to Europe (excluding the U.K.) one way
  • Air France or KLM Business Class From the U.S. East Coast or the Caribbean to Western Europe including UK one way
  • ANA business class one way to Japan

Find out more at https://www.virgin.com/virgin-red or download the Virgin Red app on your smartphone.

The Wine Flyer from British Airways

British Airways Wine Flyer
British Airways Wine Flyer

British Airways have kindly donated a year’s worth of quarterly deliveries from Wine Flyer.

Wine Flyer allows members of the British Airways Executive Club loyalty programme to collect up to 10 Avios per £1 spent on more than 140 varieties of wine. You can also redeem your Avios for wine.

Every wine chosen for the range has been produced by a country on British Airways’ global network. Prices start from less than £10 per bottle, and the range includes premium brands such as Whispering Angel, Penfolds and Moët & Chandon. Beers, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.

A proportion of the wines have been selected due to their legacy or future pour on British Airways’ flights, such as the Teusner’s ‘The Riebke’ Shiraz which has been served in the premium cabins.

Customers making one-off payments will collect 5 Avios per £1 spent on their total basket value, and those signing up to a subscription option will collect 10 Avios per £1 spent. Until 31 January 2023, you will get 15 Avios for every £1 you spend. With the subscription service, you select your product and how often you want it. You can change the frequency and contents of your subscription or pause, postpone or cancel at anytime.

Wine can be purchased from as little as 8,000 Avios per case of six, and there are options to purchase with a combination of cash and Avios.

Conrad St James London – lunch for 2 at The Pem restaurant

The Pem restaurant, Conrad St James London

The Conrad hotel underwent a big change when it redesigned its restaurant and bar area. There is now a modern cocktail bar called Hedgerow, which serves innovative and stylish cocktails as well as snacks. The Blue Boar bar has also undergone a refurbishment to give the feel of a luxury pub with a touch of a gentleman’s club. It has a similar feel to the Langham’s Wigmore but is a little less frantic.

I sampled the Pem not long after it opened and was very impressed. It is perfect for a hotel restaurant with excellent fine-dining food that is still approachable. The chef Sally Abe appeared on the Great British Menu, and has had an illustrations career working for Gordon Ramsey at Claridges and the Ledbury but is most well known for The Harwood Arms – London’s only Michelin-starred gastropub.

American Airlines move to Terminal 3 confirmed

It has been confirmed that as well as the Iberia and British Airways moves to and from Terminal 3 and 5, all American Airlines flights will now depart from Heathrow Terminal 3 from 12 July 2022 instead of being spread across the two terminals.

At present, it is not known if the changes are for the summer schedule or permanent.

Could this tempt you to fly economy?

Although Air New Zealand is not currently flying to the UK there are usually a number of airfares that include Air New Zealand for the second leg to New Zealand. However, with the latest launch of economy beds, they could make an interesting redemption or add on to a flight you have bought to get part way to New Zealand. They are also launching new business class seats.

I’d never normally consider economy on a long flight but having seen what Air New Zealand is planning I may have to reconsider. First, they brought us the Sky coach which was a row of economy seats that converted into a flat surface for sleeping. Now they have gone one better with proper beds.

Air New Zealand’s new Dreamliners, due to arrive in 2024, will have a new Business Premier Luxe seat, designed for customers looking for more space and privacy, and Skynest, the world’s first sleep pods in the sky for Economy travellers. The eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners arriving from 2024 and retrofitted current 787-9 fleet will have either eight or four Business Premier Luxe seats, 42 or 22 Business Premier, 52 or 33 Premium Economy, 125 or 213 Economy seats, and specifically on the ultra-longhaul aircraft, six Skynest sleep pods.

Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty says the cabin’s interior design is inspired by the uniqueness of Aotearoa, from the forest inspired carpet to the seats that draw inspiration from New Zealand’s native bird, the Tui.

“Whether we are welcoming visitors or flying New Zealanders home, we want our customers to experience Aotearoa from the moment they step onboard – and get the best night’s rest.

“Research shows us the first night away from home is the hardest to get a good night’s sleep so everything we do onboard is to help create a sense of calm – from the lighting and sleep ritual including sleepy teas and balms, to the healthier food choices and breathable fabrics. Meditative onscreen content, Zentertainment, will also help customers unwind and get ready for rest.

The airline has also added a Sky Pantry to the Premium Economy and Economy cabins. Sustainability has been at the heart of the design process. Using modern fabrics, rather than leather, has saved around one kilogram in weight per Business Premier and Premium Economy seat, reducing overall carbon emissions.

Business Premier Luxe

Business Premier Luxe

A luxury experience with all the features of Business Premier, but with a fully closing door and space for two to dine.

Economy Skynest

The world’s first sleep pods in the sky, Skynest. Stretch out in one of six pods for part of your journey to sleep. We don’t know the exact details of how this will work – will you book part of the trip in a bunk or can you have it for the whole time?

I have been trialling a couple of Level 8’s luxury suitcases and recently wrote a full review of the Road Runner Carry on case and the Elegance checked in luggage 24″. You can read the review here.

Level 8 makes stylish but functional cases designed to cater to every traveller’s need. I really liked the design of the Road Runner case with its front pocket that was perfect for keeping your laptop in handy reach and there was also enough room for my liquids bag to whip it out at security. Inside there was a handy zipped compartment that also had a pocket for keeping smaller bits together.

The Elegance suitcase had two separate zipped sides which is great for keeping things organised and compressing your belongings to get the maximum amount in. It also had 2 mesh compartments to keep things like dirty laundry, delicate items or paperwork tidy and within easy reach. The pieces felt like they were designed by someone who knew what regular travellers want. They also have TSA locks for which is something I always look for. TSA often search suitcases in the US and if you have a locked suitcase that is not TSA compatible they may have to break your lock or zip.

You can enter the competition from today Sunday 5 December until midnight on the 10th December 2021.

Steve Belkin is one of the legends of the frequent flyer world, a man who paid Thai rice farmers to fly back and forth on very short domestic flights to maximise his earning from a mileage promotion.

I was sent a copy of his new book “Mileage Maniac” which has a forward by the most well-known frequent flyer of all time – Randy Petersen who developed Flyer Talk, Boarding Area, and Inside Flyer. Under the tutelage of mileage godfather and founder of FlyerTalk and Boarding Area Randy Petersen, Belkin pioneered mileage scaling and travel hacking. Petersen quips that Mileage Maniac’s “madcap and succeed-at-all-costs schemes reveal Belkin’s inner Catch Me If You Can streak.”

The subtitle of the book is “My Genius, Madness And A Touch Of Evil To Amass 40 Million Frequent Flyer”.

In Mileage Maniac, Belkin reveals how his ‘Genius, Madness and a Touch of Evil’ outsmarted established airline loyalty programs of over 40 million miles. “I beat the airlines at their own game by playing by their rules but using my sometimes daring, sometimes dubious, but always effective playbook,” said Belkin.

“While stranded in Mozambique during the pandemic, I compiled two decades of my airline mileage exploits that put me in the crosshairs of most airlines’ security and fraud departments,” says Belkin. “I hope Mileage Maniac drives the conversation about the many challenges that frequent flyers face with airline loyalty programs today.”

About the Author:

Steve Belkin is the Catch Me If You Can of the frequent flyer mileage world and master navigator of the airline rewards underground. He has earned over 40 million frequent flyer miles over his lifetime through creative and convoluted mileage earning schemes. A former sports marketer for Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks talent and producer of Kwik Witz, a comedy TV show featuring previously undiscovered talent like Steve Carell and Wayne Brady, Belkin turned travel connoisseur and author. He runs Competitours, an annual European mystery travel competition like an “Amazing Race” for tourists, launching the Caribbean’s first-ever scavenger hunt/escape room/labyrinth in Cozumel called Scuba Hunt.

Review

To read this book, it helps if you have some idea how mileage collection works rather than a complete novice. The book is solely about Steve’s relationship with miles rather than an autobiography, although it does touch on his work and family in terms of how they got involved with his mileage antics and the rewards that he gained.

Steve is based in the US so obviously, the book is mainly about his exploits with US-based airlines. Although in the book he does talk about his travels all over the world, including of course my favourite part about the Thai farmers. There are quite a few work-throughs of his mileage calculations but they are fairly simple and if you are not interested in the mathematics you can just skip those parts and enjoy the stories. The Thai farmers is one of many situations where Steve maximised a promotion in the good old days when you didn’t need ID to board a plane. (Although I have rarely had to show any on domestic).

Steve also gives a good insight into human interactions as he describes his encounters with various airline managers and different cultures during his travels. This is the sort of insight that I find particularly interesting and how Steve planned his meetings in meticulous detail from a physiological warfare front!

It may make you a little annoyed if you live in the UK and read about all the great promotions they have in the US which seem to be a thing of the past in the UK now!

Another part of the stories I enjoyed was Steve’s encounters with the airline’s senior managers when they discovered that he had been maximising their offers, although always within the rules. It seems airlines have all the power in these type of situations even though no rules have been broken.

There is no doubt that Steve is at the very extreme end of mileage collection, but he does have some interesting insights into how to make the most of promotions. Much of it reminds me of the good old days of the Tesco Clubcard promotions where people would fill a trolley to the brim with bananas to get a great Clubcard bonus for example. Towards the end, Steve starts to reflect on all his madcap schemes and the reasons for him doing what he does.  The book is more story than a guide but if you collect miles the book is sure to give you food for thought.

I really enjoyed reading something very different that gives an insight into just how far people will go to game the system.

Mileage Maniac is available online at Amazon.com here but you can win a copy below.

Firstly, if you are looking to book a hotel in London but prefer something with a more individual, boutique-style, have a look at my latest Forbes article.

The Trend For London Boutique Hotels That Belong To Major Hotel Brands

Many travelers want to stay with a particular chain of hotels to keep their status or perhaps for one of the many money-saving offers from credit cards such as American Express. However, they prefer a more boutique style of hotel when travelling for leisure.

Now for the fun bit – it’s that time again. If you are missing travel or long haul flights, we have had a clear out of our unopened and unused kits and have a number to give away. There will also be another competition soon to win two nights at the Hilton Geneva – keep a lookout for that in the next couple of weeks!

There are 10 prizes to be won. Winners can choose from ONE of the following options:

  • Qatar BRICS business class amenity kit – choice of designs including pink breast cancer special, cloth bags and coloured leather look

  • BA first class pajamas men’s large
  • BA first class pajamas women’s medium
  • Qantas First Class amenity kit (read review here)
  • Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Goodie bag
  • BA First class amenity bag – men’s 100  or women’s floral
BA F Ladies amenity kit

The prizes are all equal. The prizes will be drawn in order and each winner will get a choice of the remaining items.
